This guide walks you through creating your Gettagether community from start to finish — gathering your photos and colors, creating your account, building your community, and turning on the features your group needs.
Steps 1–8: Get your details ready
A little prep makes the rest of this go quickly. Gather these before you start.
1. Choose your community name
Pick the name your group already knows and uses — for example, “The Johnson Family Reunion” or “Central High Class of 1998.” You’ll enter this when you create your community, and Gettagether will also use it to suggest your web address (Step 8).
2. Prepare your banner image
This is the wide photo that appears across the top of your community’s home page and your Join Page.
💡 Tip: Upload a photo that’s at least 1600 x 500 pixels. If your photo is smaller than that, Gettagether will stretch it to fit and it may look blurry. There’s no such thing as too big — larger photos are automatically resized down. Keep faces and important details away from the very top and bottom edges, since the crop shifts slightly depending on the theme you pick.
📌 Note: You can skip this step for now. Gettagether shows a nice default color gradient until you add your own banner.
3. Prepare your logo
This is your small, square community mark. It shows up in a circle in your left-hand menu and on your Join Page.
💡 Tip: Use a square photo that’s at least 512 x 512 pixels. Since it displays inside a circle, keep your key details centered — a crest, a monogram, or a well-cropped group photo all work nicely.
📌 Note: You can skip this too. Gettagether shows a simple default icon with your community’s initials until you upload your own.
4. Choose your brand color
Pick one accent color that represents your family or class. Gettagether uses it to color your buttons, links, and highlights throughout your community.
💡 Tip: If you don’t already have a color in mind, these free tools can help you find one:
- htmlcolorcodes.com/color-picker — click around a color wheel until you find a shade you like, and it gives you the code to copy.
- imagecolorpicker.com — upload a photo (a family photo, a class T-shirt) and click on it to pull the exact color from that image.
📌 Note: No color picked? Gettagether uses a calm neutral blue as your default.
5. Choose your theme: Classic or Hub
- Classic leads with your photos — recent memories first, then events, then updates. Best for reunions that lean nostalgic and photo-heavy.
- Hub leads with your events — upcoming plans first, then updates, then photos. Best for a committee actively planning a specific gathering.
📌 Note: You can switch themes anytime later at no cost, so don’t worry about getting this perfect now.
6. Write your welcome message
A short note that greets your members when they arrive. A good one says who the community is for and what they’ll find inside. Having a draft ready saves you a step later.
7. Gather your outside links (optional)
You can add up to 4 outside links with your own labels — for example, an existing Facebook group, a family tree site, or a class website. These appear inside your community for members only, not on the public Join Page. You can skip this and add it later.
8. Choose your web address
Your community will live at an address like gettagether.com/your-community-name. Gettagether will suggest one for you based on your community name, and check that it’s available as you type.
📌 Note: Your web address is permanent once your community is created and can’t be changed later. Pick something timeless — avoid years or dates, since your community will host many reunions over time, not just one.
Step 9: Create your account
- Go to the sign-up page and create your account with your email or a Google account.
- Check the box agreeing to the Terms of Service to continue.
📌 Note: If you’re one of our beta testers, you’ll also see a short welcome message the first time you log in, explaining that beta data may be reset before general release. This only appears during the beta period.
Step 10: Create your community
- From your account, click Create Community.
- Enter your community name, choose your theme, and confirm your web address.
- Click Create Community to finish.
Your community is live right away — there’s no waiting period. You’ll land on your Getting Started page next.
📌 Note: Each person can own one community at a time. If you already own one and try to create another, Gettagether will offer to add you to a waitlist for future multi-community support. You can still join and participate in as many other communities as you like.
Step 11: Personalize your community
Your Getting Started page has a checklist to help you finish setting things up. Nothing here is required to use your community — it’s just a helpful guide.
Under Make it yours, go to Community Settings and add the details you gathered in Steps 2–6:
- Confirm your theme
- Upload your logo
- Set your brand color
- Upload your banner
- Add your welcome message
Step 12: Invite your people and plan your first event
Still on your Getting Started page, under Bring your community to life:
- Click Share Join Link to copy your invite link or QR code, and send it to your family or class.
- Click Create Event to add your first gathering.
- Send a welcome message to your members from Messaging.
💡 Tip: Tasks you know you won’t use — like setting up online payments if you’ll never charge for anything — can be marked Not Applicable so they stop showing up on your checklist.
Step 13: Turn on the features you want
New communities start with most features turned off, so your community isn’t cluttered with empty sections. Go to Community Settings and turn on whichever of these fit your group:
| Feature | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Events | Plan gatherings with dates, locations, and RSVPs |
| Memory Board | A shared wall of photos and short stories |
| Legacy Wall | A dignified space for remembering loved ones |
| Shop | Sell reunion merchandise with built-in payments |
| Lodging | Share hotel and booking information |
| Registration | Collect reunion sign-ups and fees |
📌 Note: Your Home page, Updates feed, and Members list are always on. As soon as you turn on a feature, a link to it appears in everyone’s menu — nothing else to set up.
📌 Note: If you’re using Gettagether during the beta period, online payments (for Shop, Registration, and paid events) are temporarily turned off. This becomes available at general release.
Quick reference: photo sizes
| Photo | Upload at least | Shape | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banner | 1600 x 500 px | Wide | Home page, Join Page |
| Logo | 512 x 512 px | Square | Left menu, Join Page |
| Event photo | 1200 x 800 px | Wide | Events list, event details |
| Product photo (Shop) | up to 1200 x 1200 px | Square | Shop listings |
| Memory / Legacy photo | up to 1600 x 1600 px | Square-ish | Memory Board, Legacy Wall |
You can upload JPG, PNG, WebP, or HEIC files up to 12 MB. Photos smaller than the sizes above may look blurry once resized — bigger is always safer.
